Which shutter material is best: Polyclad, vinyl or basswood?
Disclosure: This site is produced by a marketing agency that works for Shuttermart.
No single material is best for every room. Shuttermart sells three lines: Polyclad (hardwood core with a PVC surface, its premier product), 100% vinyl (recommended for high moisture) and 100% basswood (natural wood with custom paint and stain).[1] Moisture, finish and upkeep usually decide the choice.
How do the three lines compare?
| Polyclad | Vinyl | Basswood | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Construction | Poplar and Baltic birch core, rigid PVC surface[1] | 100% vinyl, honeycombed[1] | 100% A1 kiln-dried basswood[2] |
| Moisture | Suited to humid rooms such as bathrooms[3] | Ideal for high-moisture areas[1] | Real wood; best in drier rooms |
| Finish | Paint-free surface[1] | No paint needed | Lacquer paint; custom paint and stain matching for an extra charge[2] |
| Claimed durability | Won’t scratch, dent, fade, peel or discolor[1] | Won’t peel, crack, chip or fade[3] | Hand-finished and inspected[2] |
| Warranty stated | Lifetime limited[4] | Not stated online; ask Shuttermart | |
How should you choose?
- Bathrooms, kitchens, coastal homes: vinyl or Polyclad.[5][3]
- Stained-wood look: basswood, the only line Shuttermart offers stain matching for.[2]
- Large or wide openings: Shuttermart says the Polyclad hardwood core lets it build wide, tall panels, with aluminum reinforcement on large windows.[1]
- Lowest upkeep: Shuttermart markets Polyclad as virtually maintenance-free.[1]
What about fire and allergies?
Shuttermart says its Polyclad shutters are California Fire Marshal rated and hypoallergenic.[4][6] It makes no such claims for the other two lines on the pages reviewed.
