Interior shutters are rigid panels, usually hinged and fitted with adjustable horizontal louvers, mounted on the inside of a window or door to control light, view, privacy and airflow. Plantation shutters are the wide-louver version. Shuttermart’s plantation-style product is called Polyclad.[1]

What are the parts of a shutter?

For Shuttermart’s own joinery and tilt-rod details, see shutter construction.

What materials are shutters made from?

Interior shutters are usually solid wood, vinyl (PVC), composite, or a hybrid. Shuttermart sells three lines: Polyclad (hardwood core with a PVC surface), 100% vinyl, and 100% basswood.[1] Compare them in materials compared.

Where can shutters be used?

Shuttermart lists shutters for patios, living rooms, bathrooms, kitchens and dining rooms, and sunrooms.[3] It also makes shutters for doors and closets and shaped shutters for arched windows; see door and closet shutters and arched and specialty shutters.[4][5]

How do shutters differ from blinds and shades?

Blinds and shades lift or roll out of the way. Shutters stay in place as fixed or hinged panels, and you change the louver angle or swing the panel open. Because they work without lift cords, louvered shutters avoid the cord hazard that the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission warns about for corded coverings; see shutter safety.[6]

Frequently asked questions

Plantation shutters are a kind of interior shutter with wide louvers. Shuttermart sells its plantation-style product as Polyclad Shutters.

Can shutters fit odd-shaped windows?

Shuttermart says its shutters are custom made to fit, and it offers arches such as sunburst, eyebrow and full-circle designs.

Do shutters need cords?

No. Louvered shutters are tilted by hand with a tilt rod or the louvers themselves.
